Wir überholten diese Kinder auf einem Weg in Angkor Wat. Meine Frau fuhr das Motorrad, ich konnte fotografieren.
Noch in den 1970 und 80er-Jahren war das Fahrrad zusammen mit dem Cyclo das dominierende Hauptverkehrsmittel in Kambodscha, da das Land nach Jahrzehnten des Bürgerkriegs wirtschaftlich stark geschwächt war. Automobile waren selten, und der Umstieg auf motorisierte Zweiräder begann in diesem Jahrzehnt gerade erst im Zuge der wirtschaftlichen Öffnung. Das hatte sich Ende der 90er Jahre bereits geändert, jetzt waren es kleine Mopeds (meisten Honda), die im Straßenbild dominierten. Doch für viele, insbesondere Jugendliche und Kinder, war das Fahrrad die bevorzugte Möglichkeit, mittlere Strecken zur Arbeit oder zur Schule zurückzulegen.

As recently as the 1970s and 80s, the bicycle—along with the cyclo—was the primary mode of transport in Cambodia, as the country had been severely weakened economically after decades of civil war. Automobiles were rare, and the shift to motorized two-wheelers was only just beginning during that decade as the economy opened up. By the late 1990s, however, the situation had changed; small mopeds (mostly Hondas) now dominated the streets. Yet for many—especially young people and children—the bicycle remained the preferred way to cover medium distances to work or school.
