Das Mädchen wohnte bei seiner Familie in der Hausbootsiedlung vor Diamond Island (Koh Pich), im Zentrum von Phnom Penh direkt am Sap-Fluss. Wir waren uns schon zuvor begegnet, als ich mit dem Outreach Team der NGO Little Friends nachts unterwegs war.
Die Hausbootsiedlung wurde vertrieben als chinesische Investoren ab 2015 begannden, die City von Phnom Penh durch den Bau von Luxus-Eigentumswohnungen, Einkaufszentren und Bürokomplexen zu entwickeln. Hochhäuser schossen wir Pilze aus dem Boden. Für neue Bauflächen wurden ehemals funktionale städtische Seen und Sumpfgebiete sukzessive zugeschüttet.

The girl lived with her family in the houseboat settlement off Diamond Island (Koh Pich), in the center of Phnom Penh right by the Sap River. We had met previously when I was out at night with the outreach team from the NGO Little Friends.
The houseboat settlement was displaced when Chinese investors began developing Phnom Penh’s urban landscape from 2015 onwards through the construction of luxury condominiums, shopping malls, and office complexes. High-rises sprang up like mushrooms. Urban lakes and wetlands that had once served a functional purpose were gradually filled in to create new land for construction.
